Tn the third set. his play again becoming patchy. Wood lost the service in the second and IJorotra quickly amassed a three to love lead. Ihe Frenchman was playing high grade tennis, his work at the net being faultless. lie volleyed with precision and shoved an instinct for angling his shots into a placement. Wood again lost a service in the fourth game at 0-1. but retaliated and the Frnchiiian also lost his service in the filth. At 0-1 W'ood again lost his service and Borotra- led .VI. eventually winning the set 0 games against 1. In the fourth set the games alter-
nated without great incident, until the eighth, when TJorotra lost his service. It was a vital game, the loss ol which might spell the Australian s victory, but tlie Frenchman showed well balanced. all round tennis and pulled out. the score standing four all. 'I he Australian, however, hided his chance and lobbing the Frenchman into errors, broke the hitter’s service in the tenth and won 0-1.
NEW YORK, Sent. I. In the fifth set Wood again played great tennis. The Frenchman’s clever placements left the Australian losing the third game oil service, hut Wood won the hist live points and saved the game. The French man in the fourth did virtually the same thing winning from 2 —3 points. Wood was lighting his hardest when the odds were the
greatest. He invited his opponent in--7,, ~ volleying duel, in which he broke through the Frotichinan’s defence m the sixth, and led 1-2. He was now not to he denied, overwhelming Dorotra and tearing through the hitterservice. He won the eighth I—l and the set o—2. The doubles draw is Rmgnian and l.aeoste against Wood and Patterson.
