He claims that there was difficulty in maintaining action, this being due to the Germans’ persistent roiioating under smoke screens. DOUGLAS MAWSOX SEARCH. THURSDAY ISLAND. Aug. 9. I'rnhniiiy Capt. Wilkins (the explorer) and Rovci. Watson, who is iu charge of the Methodist Mission .stations in the Northern Territory will endeavour to rescue the supposed survivors Irom the Douglas Mawson. Rev. Watson considers the best method of procedure is a quiet investigation by two or three whites, whom the blacks favour. A DOI'BLK TRAGEDY. LONDON, August 51. A curious double tragedy occurred in :i block ol fashionable flats in Jerniyu Street. Mrs Gcddes rushed downstjiiis shrieking that her husband had shot himself. Then she returned to her Hat. while a doctor was being summomst. Almost Im.medial'ely another shot was heard. Ilolh the husband and wife were found to lie mortally wounded. The husband was Captain T. .). R. Gedcles, who was home on leave from the Indian Army. The couple had keen married only nine months. They were due to return to Bombay to-day. A letter was discovered, which began: "Dearest Wife— We have come to tiu* end of our resources, and, as arranged between ourselves, I am going to shoot myself.” One theory is that the wile committed suicide with her husband's revolver from grief at his loss. The other is that there was a death pact, and, when the husband shot himself, the wife’s courage Ruling, she gave the alarm, hut recovered her nerve when she reentered the flat and shot herself with ttie sjiine weapon.
