Au address on “The Importance of the Local Market to Beekeepers." was given by Mr 0. H. Sargeaut, Gove.u. ment- Apiary Instructor, before iiiem--1 cts of the Canterbury Beekeepers' Association, on Saturday night. AI" P. Jack, president of the A'soeiation was in the chair. The state of the New Zealand market, said the speaker, was most misatisfactory from the producers’ point of view . The past season, esjieeiallv in the Smith Island, had not been a good one, yet merchants were oll’eriitg only a small price for honey. Though there had been an increase in the supply during recent years the demand had net increased proportionately. Honey was not au article of diet in as many homes as it should he, while in hotels it was seldom, if ever seen. Despite seme disappointments, growers had obtained a fairly good price for exported honey, hut the same could not he said for the local market. Unfortunately tile storekeeper would not oiler a fair priie. In the old days the amateur -beekeeper had exchanged hi. product with the .'tnrekeet.-er for other goods, and this, perhaps had had something to do with the attitude c the storekeepers. Some growers mil 1.-nrtered tlu-ir honey. Another enemy of tin- conime-cial licek-.c) cr was the careless person who sold his ] rodnel in dirty tins. An amendment to the Act in the direction of empowering inspectors to inspect extractors would lof benefit to till- up-to-date apiarist. ’Plie beekeepers had improved conditions in connexion with the export trade, and there- was no reason w n local conditions could not. lie similarly improved. Unless something were none in tin- nature of control. <oi the lines adopted by the Irnilgioucr:-. lie -aw veil little ehali-e -d an improvement in the local money market. The beekeepers were not profiteers, hilt tht-v wanted a fair price for their prodint and the prevention of utider-sel-nllg.
