An eight-roomed residence at Epsom, Auckland, owned and occupied by Mrs A. H. Wilson, was extensively damaged by fire last night. Three rooms were gutted and a good deal of furniture destroyed. The cause was an electric iron left ett the table with the power switched on.

A young salesman, named Erie -Jones, appeared in the Magistrate’s Court to-day, charged with breaking and entering the second-hand simp of .Mr Sternberg, and stealing jewellery valued at L’ls-’L lie pleaded not guilty and was oommiite! to the Supreme Court win- trial. Accused was arrested in Auckland.
VESSEL IN STOPJI. WELLINGTON, duly 23. Heavy seas in the Straits compelled the si earner Wairau, which was on her way from ISlenheim to Lyttelton, to take refuge in Wellington. At the entrance to the harbour a big sea came aboard and carried away the safe and did considerable damage to articles and gear on deck. She will he delayed here.
SUPREME COURT. A UC’K LAND, July 23
At the Supreme Court nt Auckland. Stanley Lawrence George Grouch, for breaking and entering and theft, was admitted to two years’ probation. Sidney Gorman admitted bigamy, and it was staled that divorce proceedings had been commenced by his legal wife. Mr dust ice Stringer hound the
accused over in his own recognisance to conic up for sentence in February. If Ids matrimonial affairs were cleared up by then nothing more would lie heard about the matter.
