LEOPOLD-LOEB MURDERS. NEW YORK, July 21. A message from Chicago states that a scsiitionai scene followed the pica of guilty entered hy counsel for Leopold and I.ocli. The case is still commanding attention throughout the country. The defence requested the Court and jurv to hear evidence pertaining to the youths’ so-called degree of responsibility. .. . Hereupon the State Attorney, .Mi Grower, interrupted, shouting angrily: •‘lf the defence is trying to show that ihe accused are insane, how can ther plead guilty?" Defending counsel answered that the plea was a fonnal one. ll it held good •with the jury, the case would have the air of a circus, or music hall fierforiii-
ame. “Let the Court." he said, “sentence the youths as it sees lit. Wo are cognisant that the Court may sentence them to death.” Mr Grower thereupon announced that he would summon every State witness to testily. The Court reopens on Wednesday to hear evidence, which probably will consume several weeks.
