FOOTBALL.

JUNIOR RF.P GAME. WESTLAND Id—GREY G.

The Junior Representative gathc, Grey v. Westland, took place oil Saturday afternoon on Cass Square, the conditions being the reverse of good. The ground was a veritable quagmire, and to make things more, unpleasant there was a fairly stilf southerly blowing with Mount Cook's icy blast, while conditions overhead were threatening, although rain did not eventuate. Tor the greater part of the first spell Grey looked as if they might win, hut when the home forwards got into their stride ami the hacks begun to get warmed up things began to look more promising, and hv the end of the spell it was evident that if the red and blacks continued to throw the hall about and if Grey did not improve their tackling, play would go against them. They had the material and the speed, but failed to make use of it, paying dearly for their inexperience at times. On several occasions I. ’lainui held up practically the whole of the Grey team, in.the end getting the hall clean away to his hacks, l’leasing features of the game were the way the Westland forwards indulged in passing rushes with the hacks and the opportunities they took in securing the hall and letting it out to their hacks instead of using the hoot as is the general custom, it showing that they can um* their own initiative under a good general. The Grcv lorwards worked well enough, hut their tackling was not all that could he desired. T. Taiuoi controlled his forwards well under the circumstances and got the best out of them, they combining with the hack division oil several occasions. D. Tainui was tile star ol the day ami his play at times was brilliant. The other four Tainuis played good football and it was a great treat to see them handling the hall, working on cither side of the scrum, and at times introducing all the tricks ol the trade, which appeared to he a great surprise to some of the Grey players. Ableson ills,, put over some excellent siufl. his attack and defensive work being very solid. Although Aickon missed several times he did exceedingly well, his taking, kicking, following up and (iuiliug being .good, hut he will bate to he quicker oil the mark and keep i:i his pi me it he wants to ho a liisl ruler. All the red and black forwards wore i'll their game and gave the linest display witnessed on the Square for some time. The Grey full hack was the hostback of his side, his tackling, kicking, following up, taking and finding being good, his style of play being M inething similar to that ol (loodnli a who was her? in action two weeks ago. What was seen of the Grey half-hack’s play was good. The. Grey wing-for-ward knew more than the red and black man with regard to placing the hull in the scrum. Sometimes he was caught, but sometimes he wasn’t. Ihe (trey lorwards as a whole worked well in the loose, hut both ill the loose and the tight the liaril-headedness of the We-tlaml hack division was too solid for them. It was said when the Plucks got defeated in the first test that it was youth versus hard-headed-, ness and the same may he applied to i,l, c game on Saturday, Grey, perhaps profiting by the experience. ! .Mr I-:. The Maori combination were now beginning to find themselves and the red and black torwards were also working better together.
