A meteor of extraordinary bounty and brilliance was observed in the direction of the. AA ither Hills at. about, five minutes to eight last night. Those who witnessed the flight of the lier.v mill, with a streaming tail, declare that it was a wonderful s] eetacle. Although the night was brightly moonlight, the meteor Jit up the hill still more brightly as it: descended. Ihe meteor travelled from east to west and seemed to reach the earth among • lie foothills behind, and to the east of It isl wood town.

Great publicity has lately been given to the fact that tile New Zealand Pavilion at Wembley, as an advertisement of the potentialities of the Dominion had utterly tailed to reach the expectations of visitors and the Palmerston North Chamber of Commerce to-night decided to ask the Government to investigate these I teely-eii-ciliated reports. The President of the Chamber (Mr 11. L. Young) emphasised the serious effects an unworthy display would have on the Domini and lie urged immediate steps to see the exhibits placed in the Pavilion should do justice to the country they represented. Another member declared that it the statements, as published, were true, a great injustice had been done to the Dominion.

OBITUARY. THAMES. July 10.
Charles Judd aged 87. founder of the first foundry in Thames, which ho established ill 1808. His firm constructed most of the iron lighthouses on the New Zealand coast.

At the Supreme Court this morning. Lionel Lancelot Hitehings. a solicitor, was found guilty of failing to account for £ls sterling to his employers. He was admitted to probation for 3 years.

When .1. Preston, driver of a motor lorry, was cranking bis engine an explosion lifted tbe engine bodily and twisted it right round. Preston was thrown against a wall with considerable force, but escaped serious injury. The engine is damaged beyond repair. It is supposed a quantity of gunpowder bad been placed in tbe engine. DANGER OF BENZINE. BLENHEIM, July 10. James Mills, a returned soldier, aged 15. was badly burned at Pieton to-day. 11 is brother-in-law was lighting the kitchen lire, and picked up wlmt lie thought was a kerosene tin to start the blaze. It was, however, a benzine tin bull lull, which exploded, and the llamiii.g contents poured over .Mills, who was standing close liy. The man ran to a water-hole and jumped in but was very badly burned. lie was removed to the hospital, where lie lies in a serious condition.
IMPORTANT JUDGMENT. WESTLAND COUNTY .MOTOR BYE-LAW.

Judgment was given by the Full Court, in the ease ol Nicholson against the Chairman and Councillors of the County of Westland. This was a motion under the Bye-Laws Alt, 1910, to quash the bye-law ol tbe AAcsllaiul County Council relating to motor vehicles. The court decided to amend the bye-law by altering the definition of motor-ear and by making eel tain additions to those parts ol the by-law dealing with license lees. The npplnant was allowed 95 costs. This sum in practice is always awarded in such eases, together with disbursements.
