FIRE ENGINES COLLIDE.
DUNEDIN. July 3
While responding to justifiable false fire alarms from Stiidholme House, Otago University Hostel last night, an accident occurred in which fire engines collided. The machines were boui damaged. The firemen escaped serious injury, although a number were bruised and shaken. One machine was proceeding down Albany Street and it struck an engine proceeding along Leith Street. On it rounding the corner, there was a terrific crash. The firemen were thrown in all directions. Three were, convoyed to the hospital, while two were able to proceed home. Of the others. J. Blake was admitted to hospital, suffering from a severe shaking and from shock. The engine that was proceeding down Albany St. had its radiator badly damaged and tile front righthand wheel torn off, and a large extension ladder was slightly damaged.
The other machine was struck below the driver's seat and the running hoard and side of the battery, and tool chest was torn ofL and a hand chemical extinguisher was destroyed while a larger chemical extinguisher below the driver's seat was smashed in. The firemen in the front and on the sides of the engines had a miraculous escape, as if they had collided lull on, the men would pi nimbly have been crushed to death. The side-oil collision saved them by a few feet. Both engines were removed to a nearby garage, and a small extension ladder was towed hack to the station. SPLIT BANK NOTES. ‘ ACCUSED COMMITTED.
