The jury returned a verdict for defendant in the ease wherein A. X. Bishop claimed £20.00(1 from “Smilb's Weekly” for alleged libel contained ill articles published in that paper. Tho innuendos were declared to he that plaintiff' was dishonest, corrupt in business dealings, that lie falsely represented himself in business relations, that he was an impostor, was a convicted criminal, had been continually guilty of false pretences and traudlllent misrepresentation. The defendants pleaded not guilty and also that the articles were the truth and were for the public benefit. At the ionelusion of the ease Mr Justice James intimated his intent ion. if the Minister thought it necessary, to give leave to prosecute plaintiff on a charge of perjury. DESIRABLE SETTLERS FOR AUSTRALIA. SYDNEY. July 3. Speaking at the New Settlers League Conference. Dr Horsfall said that ill building up Australia’s population they should study the racial characteristics of immigrants with a view to their assimilation among the present population. He suggested that Scots, Danes, Finns, Lithuanians. Ij.ett- and some of the Geitmau people, notably the Bavarians, would he mo-i suitable to assimilate with the present population.
Canon Garland slated that more than half the sugar cane growers in Queensland were Italians.
SOLDIERS’ TREATMENT. MELBOURNE. July I. In the House of Representatives Mr Bruce intimated the. .Ministry had deeded to appoint a Royal Commission to inquire whether the disabilities stilfered hv certain ex-soldiers, were due to, or aggravated by their war selviees; also whether the present methods of arriving at soldiers’ pensions were all that could he desired.

July L The House of Representatives negatived a motion for the appointment ot •i Roval Commission to inquire ,nt j the administration of the mandated territory of New Guinea and certain charges' of alleged maladministration. .Mr Bruce, in opposing the Commission. declared the charges were already the subject of an inquiry and a Commission was unnecessary, because the Common wealth had secured Iron. Hie Imperial Government the servmes o one of their most experienced o.:ec.‘in native admii.istration. Colonel Ainsworth. He was instructed to make tlm fullest possible inquiry and render n frank report. Colonel Ainsworth had been in New Guinea or some time. His report is expeetc shortly and if it guv any that a Commission was neeess.tij Government would take step- to the matter fully probed.
