PLEA FOR SAirril. NEW YORK, June 25
franklin Roosevelt, former I’nder.Scerotary for the Navy, in putting Smith into the nomination for the Presidency before the "Democratic Convention stressed Smith’s hninanitf|, honesty and efficiency. Apparently referring to Smith’s Catholicism, he reminded the delegates of their sacred trust to put from their hearts every ignoble prejudice. Air Roosevelt, after attacking the Republican administration, concluded:—“(live Smith the opportunity for wider service and the pessimists shall no longer point the finger of scorn at our executive ntacliinery.”
DEMOCRATIC CONVENTION. AN A MCNIGHT SITTING. (Received this day at 10.215 a.nt.) NEW YORK. June 215. The Democratic Resolutions’ Committee, under the chairmanship of Senator Cummings. continued all night, the session being devoted to the consideration of the various planks of the proposed platform which the optimists hope will lie ready for presentation to the Convention to-morrow. The Chief groups are advocating planks on behalf of the League of Nations with a reservation on Articles Teh and Sixteen.
The anti-Klu Kltix Klan, the Prohibitionists and Anti-Prohibitionists, and the National League of Women Voters are asking for adhesion to the world Court and the endorsement of a social legislation programme. The American Federation of Labour asks for the adoption of the programme (cabled on 7th. Afay). The agricultural interests want relief for the farmers and railway legislation reform.
Tile session, however, brought rumours of strong dissension. The platform will not he constructed without engendering deep resentment. A division of strength between AlcAdoo and Smith continue without apparent hope of a compromise. Both indicate that they will relentlessly hold their followers. It is clear that no candidate can secure it two-thirds majority unless one of them gives way. All these problems mean endless night conferences for the delegates and leaders.
