Tlie position is now that twenty-one results lire awaited and if these aro the- same as last election, the pact will have a majority of twenty-two. THE PREVIOUS VOTING. The position of the parties after the 1021 election was:—South Afriaeu Party 71; Nationalists 17; Labour Party 12; Independent 1. OPPOSITION 10 AHEAD. CAPETOWN. June 18. The latest returns in the South African elections iv<* the state of parties as follows;—■ South African Party 'll! Labour 18 Nationalists II Independent 1 There are still twenty-nine results incomplete. Two more Ministers. Colonel Afentz (Defence) and .Air Malan (.Alines; have been defeated. The former Administrator, Tlobertson, was defated at Wak he Ist room. An unexpected Nationalist pain was in General Botha’s old strong-hold. Ixisherg. Other Nationalist gains were at Mnrico, Bustenherc. Vcntorsdni p. and Heidelburg. Three more Ministers, Messrs Smartt Reitz, and Watt, were re-elected. Twelve members have offered their seats to General Smuts. In a message, General Sin fits, in thanking his committee, says:—“Be of pood cheer! From the wider viewpoints which shape national policy, our failure may yet prove a blessing in disguise. My faith in faith remains as strong as ever. Although the immediate outlook before the country is gloomy enough, in that faith, we shall hold on unflinchingly.”

FEATURE OF ELECTIONS. CAPETOWN. June IP. A feature of the elections is the landslide to the Pact ill Transvaal. In Cape and Natal provinces, the Government fullv held its own. General Smuts, in a message, gives expression to the hope that he will still continue to lead the parly. The defeat of the Preference resolutions in the British Parliament lias caused great disappointment. It is almost certain, to he seized upon by the now Government as a pretext for abolishing British Preference in the South African Union. Such preference has always been opposed by the Mertzog Party, and now that the Tlertzog Government is a certainty, the whole press convey eoiigraulations and express the hope that all parties will help the new Government.
