It would appear from inquiries made in Wellington that there is little likelihood of the embargo on the importation of stock being removed by tlio -Minister for Agriculture. This is due, it is said, in a large measure to the prevalence of foot and month disease in Europe, of rinderpest in Western Australia, and of red water fever in i\cw South Wales. Tbe second embargo was imposed in January of this year. .Many farmers took advantage of importing what stock they required before that month.

A few weeks ago reference was made to some tallies forwarded to the relatives of an Auckland business man, from Vancouver. The first stated that the business man, who is on his way to the Imperial Exhibition in London bad inherited £30,000 and wanted £12.500 forwarded promptly for bonds and administrative costs. Cables were also forwarded to the bank of the gentleman on tour, and also to bis brother. Jt is almost needless to state that the money was not forwarded. Then came another cable stating be was waiting for the money, and finally a further message was received cancelling all former ones, and adding ‘‘Have .sufficient funds.” Meanwhile the cable bad been set to work to got in touch with the businessman, and a reply lias been received that all lh<* former cables bearing his name were forgeries. This points to a well laid scheme to try and fleece a tourist. Tbe scheme, however, did not work, and the senders of the cables are about £lO out of pocket for messages forwarded to Auckland.
