From lion. M. Pom are. in reference to payment of levy liy local hodies. Received. From Dr. Valintine. Wellington, in reference to maternity eases. and a.skinthe Hoard to consider the erection ol a maternity annexe to Westland Hospital; and also to make temporary arrangements for carrying on meanwhile, due to Mrs llalliday notifying her intention of closing her maternity home.—Received.

The Chairman moved that Mr Davidson. Mr Stevenson and the Secretary visit Ross and report ns to the rost and advisability of removing Ross hospital to Hokitika and its re-erection in the Westland Hospital grounds. Tie did so as he thought that was the only way to find what they could do. It was all a <|UCSlion of finance. Mr Davidson did not think that the erection of a wooden building suitable for such a purpose. Mr Jeffries said this was a very serious position and deserved the grave cim.-ideraiton of the Board. He doubtled very much whether the Departmentwould agree to the removal of .the Boss hospital building. The Department should then either open the Ross hospital as a maternity home, or else find the motley to enable the Board to civet a. suitable brick annexe at Westland I lo.spital.

Mr Wells supported the attitude of Mr Jell'ties that they should first inquire as to whether the Department would approve of the removal of the Ross hospital.

Air Mehiirry would not support the removal ol the Ross hospital tit- all* lie would favor the placing of a matron in charge there.

The Chairman stated that in that case it would he necessary to appoint a resident medical officer.

Air Jeffries moved that the Hoard replv pointing out tlmt the Hoard had plans approved by the Department for the erection of a maternity home and asking if such would still have their approval. Seconded hv Alt Alclmrry.

Air Davidson pointed out that if Moss hospital were utilised it would he necessary to staff the hospital and appoint a doctor, as well, whereas much of this expense could he saved if the home were at AVestlaud Hospital. Mr Morel would not. approve of the i.lciiing of a home tit Ross. The Chairman favored the erection of a home in Hokitika. The motion was agreed to.
