WESTLAND HOSPITAL BOARD

MONDAY MAY 12th. The Board met at 8.10 p.m. Present—Messrs J. J. Breeze (Chairman), G. if. Blank, G. Davidson, R. Mcharry T. W. Duff, W. Jeffries, A. TL Spiers and L. Morel. An apology for absence was "made for Mr Wells The minutes were read, and after (on the motion of the Chairman and Mr Blank) a paragraph had been deleted. in which a grant of half the cost of expenses incurred was made to Mr T. A. Condon, the minutes as amended were confirmed, and the Secretary was instructed to notify Mr Condon, and all applicants for similar grants that the auditor had objected to the payment on the grounds that the payment was illegal, the only payment allowed being in connection with accouchement eases.

The outward correspondence was read and approved. INWARD CORRESPONDENCE.

From Minister of Health, stating he was unable to make a grant of £2030 for the Old Peoples’ Home.—Received. Mr Jeffries said the letter was very unsatisfactory. The Minister practically told them that their claim for a grant was not worthy. There was no eueouragemnt for a Board that did its utmost to conserve the finances ol both the local bodies and the Government.

It was. another example of the square deal that they were not receiving from the present Government. Mi- David."in moved that a further

application he made to the Government for a grant of £IBOO. Seconded l>y Mr Duff, who said he did not like tile reply of the Minister to what was only a fair request.

.tir Davidson asked that a copy of the resolution and tho schedule drawn up he forwarded to the Member lor the Dnstriel. Mr .1. O’Brien, who had promised to do his utmost to secure it grant. The Chairman expressed his regret ill the attitude of the Minister. The motion w.-is then agreed to. From Dr Valintino notifying that the interest to he charged local bodies by he Board on overdue levies was 7 per cent.—Received.

From Commissioner of Taxes asking for returns.—Received.

From Pa tea Board urging that an alteration he made to the Compensation Act to enable Hospital Hoards to obtain payment for maintenance in accident cases front the compensation paid.-—Received and to be supported.

From Mrs Jean Scott. Christchurch, accepting appointment its District Nurse.—Received.

Mi- Davidson reported the cottage at Watlto had been completed except on some small matters requiring attention: that a good, job hail been made; that lie had approved of the making of a mad from the main mail to the stittiie at it cost of £3o.—Received and approved. Mr Davidson being thanked for bis report.
