OVERSEER MfLLNER’S REPORT,
NORTHERN RIDING
Kuni.'irii to Kapitea Road. The Contraetors for Lliis work commenced clearing ami forming between the present terminus of formation, and Aero Creek, and have completed 15 chains of clearing and eight chains of grubbing and part formation.
Clearing Kapiton to Kumara road formation a distance of one mile at Kumnrn Reach Hoad and extending south towards Acre Creek. This work was badly overgrown with goise and blackberry rendering the formation impassable to foot and horse traffic, and being required for haulage of timber and concrete pipes for culvert construction on Kumara to Kapitea Road Extension. The contract for clearing over tho wholo distance was let to .1. Ferguson and I’arty for the sum of £SO.
• Culverts were repaired on Ltmplino, Hillmans and Kumara Junction Roads, and slips were removed from Kapitea and Kumara to Hokitika roads, and wind blown trees removed from Little Kapitea Road, and temporary repairs affected to the covering of a culvert on the main road between I.ooplinc and
Kapitea. Flood damage repairs were effected to very had scours on Hokitika-Kn-mara Road between Callaghans and Piper's Flat, and temporary repairs effected to the partly destroyed approach to Waimea Creek Bridge at Goldsboriigh, and to wash-outs on the western approach to Waimea Creek Bridge and Piper’s Flat. Material was proeeured for Waimea Creek Protection at Piper's Flat in readiness for the work to start the first week in May. Watcrtables were cleaned on llokitika-Kumara. Awatuna. and Blue Spur to Arahurn Roads, and two road drains reopened on the main road between Malfrny’s .Mill and four Mile Creek Bridge. The 30in. diameter concrete pipe culvert on One Mile Road partly completed last month was filled ill with gravel and stone, and the decking of the old culvert, covering the uncompleted work removed and stacked for use elsewhere. Urgent repairs were ell'eeted to had holes over a short distance on Arahura Valley Road and to several low places on Bradley's Road.
CENTRAL Rim.NO. Hokitika Flat Improvement at Koiterangi. A. Fleming. Contractor- 'lbis work was completed in a fairly satisfactory manner, no damage being sustained during the very heavy Hoad of 22nd.-23rd. of April. To prevent the Hood water scouring the metal oil the road beyond tin recently improved portion, it is advisable to expend £!) in cutting a large drain a distance of (idl) links to give an outlet tor Hood water at the boundary of Johnson Road Reserve. At present the surrounding surface below the old culvert is as high as the bottom of the stringers, which prevents the discharge of any quantity of water during Ho.ul. lliis can lie remedied by the construction of the new drain with an outlet to the creek channel below the new culvert constructed by Fleming and Party. Kokatahi Bridge Protection. C2OO grant, was continued, and the work completed tile specified distance. No damage resulted during the lie.ivt Hoods experienced to date. The small balance remaining will be expended in repairing 200 links of.tlie old protective work immediately abate the bridge, and will he proceeded with as soon as the river is at normal level. Portions of Lower Kokatahi. Whitcombe Valley. Cropps, McArthurs. Lake Kanieri and liokitika-Lake Kanieri roads were repaired with blinded metal and gravel, water-tables and growth cleared on Blue Spur. I Inki-tika-Hau Him. Ktriulaiid Creek Bridge, Lake Kanieri road was repaired with -I 17 and 4.T0 feat by 15 \ 8 stringers, also the hand-railing and decking renewed, and trestles diagonally braced.

Lower Kokatalii Road in the Kanieri township. between lto-?s Road junction and Camp Street. win partly graded, scarilied. crowned and raised with rough tailing gravel well rolled with the road roller, metalled villi crushed metal, blinded with line gravel and re-rolled, resulting in a line surface and smooth-running road, very creditable to all concerned in the (ou-
st met ion. Kokatalii River liridge and Hokitika River liridge were sanded for horse traffic and outlet drains reopened, at. Moods took, Ross Road. Selby, and Ibo decking of a covered culvert on Adair's Road repaired and placed in order. . sornierx riding.
Flo id damage repairs were ellected to the scrub protectioi* work under Horse Shoe Creek bridge, leinporary repairs were completed to the damaged approach to Harvey's Creel; liridge; al-o ‘Tours and water-tables cleaned on Vw.'.illumse Road. A number of slips and wash-outs were panlv removed and repaired on Totaro Road and Track. Slips removed and water-tables cleaned on Ross eemeterv liiil. An IS-inth dia-
meter concrete pipe culvert const meted under the rotid on Tola re. Hill, and the roads repaired between the pipe drain and Totara liridge. Ross Road. A gravel pit on Ruutapu Road wtts clean'd and stripped in readiness for repairs to Ross Road as soon as drays are procurable. Water-tables and drains were cleaned, motor boles repaired and small slips removed from Iloss road between Frosty Creek and Kokatalii Track. The badly worn upper portion of Waitalui Settlement Road was repaired, more than 300 yards of gravel being used for the purpose; water-tables cleaned and ruts raked on Waitalui Settlement. La Fontaine, I’etersen’s and Wanganui Flat Roads. A scoured culvert was also repaired on Wanganui Flat Road, and metal broken on J.a Fontaine mid Robertson's Road. The contractor for La Fontaine Road Extension commenced work but owing to wet weather had not completed more than a few chains of formation.

Hokitika-Kumarii road Iw-tween Stafford and Kuninrn damaged by flood and cut up a good deal with the extra traffic during bad weather, will require two horses and drays continually employed to keep it in order. Ross Road also requires considerable attention. which will necessitate the use of two horses and drays for a few months, especially during the winter. Arahura Road scoured by flood between D. Agnew’s and Two Mile Road, reqifiros £-25 expending in gravelling the rough places,
