Jl*w the (hui;' Started.—How Ned and Den Kelly first look to “The Bush” —The famous Kelly gang commenrecl operations on April loth, 1878. Dan Kelly was wanted on a charge of horsestealing. Cut the police could not find him. Hearing that he was secretly hack at his home, Constable Fitzpatrick went to the Kelly’s hut at Greta to arrest him. The story i.; that w hen Fitzpatrick rode up, Dan was standing at the door. “You’re my prisoner.” said the policeman. Dan said he had been riding all day without anything to eat and Fitzpatrick agreed to let him have some food before taking him to Benulht. As Dan was going 'inside. Mrs Kelly said, '’You won't take Dan out of this to-night.” Mrs Kelly continued to grumble in an undertone, w hile she phu ml broad and meat and tea on the table, pan appeared to he taking his arrest coolly as il it were a matter of cour-o. The constable accepted tho invitation to oat also, and a. lio seated himself Mis Kelly remailced. “If my son. Nod was here he would throw you out ef ‘he window.” ‘‘Here he is now.” explained Dan. Fitzpatrick turned to look. Simultaneously Dan pounced on him. Mrs Kelly seized a heavy garden .spade used as it fire shovel and struck Fitzpatrick- it furious blow on the head, lie fell. Several people rushed into the house. Among them was Ned Kelly holding a revolver in his hand, which was still smoking. The ooiistahle nursed a wounded nun. He reported the matter on arrival til the police stitiou with the' result that a posse went out and succeeded in arresting Mrs Kelly, William Williams and William Kkillian. Mrs Kelly was sentenced to three years and the men received six yearS. And such was the beginning of the Kelly gang ••the incident that destined to have a far-reach-ing ed’ect as is depicted so vividly in the masterful motion picture “When the Kellys Were Out" which is to be presented tit the I’l'ince-s ’theatre on Wednesday.
