HOKITIKA BOROUGH COUNCIL.
FHIDAY, MAY 9th. The Council met nt 7.90 p.m. Present:—Messrs 0. A. l’crry (Mayor), H. M. Coulson, J. Kin}:, 1). J. Evans, 1?. F. Perhiim, AV. D. Maekay and G. Heinz.
The minutes were confirmed, and outward correspondence approved. IXWAItD CORRESPONDENCE.
From the Prime Minister acknowledging resolution of Council re strike (already published).—Received.
From Westland Hospital Board notifying levy had been made, the Counvil’s portion boing £559 11s Bid, payable in nine instalments.—Received. From Win. Berry drawing attention to state of roadway in front of his shop. Weld St. and asking for attention.—Received. The Chairman of the Public Works Committee stated the work was necessary and would he put in hand at once. It was agreed on the suggestion of Air Evans that the footpath he kerbed. From Engineer, Christchurch Drainage Board asking for particulars of requirements of Council in connection with drainage proposals.—Received ; to lie written to advising a week end visit.
From C. Gibbons asking for annual leave.—Received; request granted. Front Miss E. Ward, asking for connection of her property with the walei supply.—Received ; referred to Public Works Chairman and Overseer to arrange. From Westland Cool Storage and Dairy Coy. asking for completion of road and footway in front of the factory.—Received ; referred to Public Works Committee to report. REPORTS. From Treasurer reporting receipts £S(S 18s, payments £373 14s 'Oil. credit balance £345 Is 4d, loan account credit C 59 12s (id.—Received . Accounts amounting to £5-i0 Ss 2d were passed far payment. From Manager of Abattoirs (J. Jarman) reporting (luring April there were examined 29 cows, 40 heifers, 48 bullocks, 485 sheep, 118 lambs, 12 pigs. 22 calves. Condemned 1 cow, 1 bullock. Fees for the month £B7 15s od. Received. OVERSEER’S REPORT. I beg to submit the following report on work done during the past month: Weld Street has been gravelled as far as Sale Street and now only requires a thin coat of bench shingle to form a good .surface. Rrittnn Street has been cleaned up between Weld and SlatFoid Streets, and the drain on the western side widened and deepened. Twelve inch concrete pipes have been laid across AVold Street, to replace a box drain that bad collapsed, and about It chains of 12 inch concrete pi[>es laid across Stafford Street in place of the six inch earthenware drain, that had been crushed by the heavy traffic. During the month the Borough horse was engaged about I week mowing and carting grass oil (lass Square, vith l. Coyle in charge. Two men were also engaged for three days improving the track and cleaning up.
Owing to the water in the reservoir showing a falling oil', the pipe line lias been inspected .ne whole distance, occupying two days, several leaks stopped and air valves attended to. 1 lie supply now shows a considerable improvement . One of the staff has been employed most ol tin: month at Sale Street drain laving pipes, and connecting up iliains from residences.
During the month 5 chains of 18i
ooiiiTolo pipes. 1 chain of 12in. and a quantity of ball pipes lor crossings have been made. I visited the cemetery on two occasions. Tin- sexton lias cleaned several paths, cut down blackberry, and mowed era-s on ornamental plots, and formed a new pathway. A quantity of "ravel is now required on several paths, that have not yet been gravelled. Ninety feet of earthenware pipes have lieen delivered, and will he placed in position us soon ns the sexton s annual leave expires.
Two water connections have been made to new residences, and one crossing eonstruiTed during the month. Most of the streets showing signs of wear have been repaired, breaks in water service attended to. also stieet cleaning and miautenanee work during the past month.— Received. Air Heinz reported on a conference with Air ('eilerman in reference to the application for improved drainage conditions, and after di-cu-sion the tunnlil res J veil to visit the locality and defer consideration till next meeting. it was resolved to invite tenders for supply of gravel. The Council rose at 8.20 p.m.
