HOKITIKA BOROUGH COUNCIL.
TUESDAY, APRIL 29th
The ordinary meeting of the Council, adjourned from Thursday last owing to want of a quorum, was held at 7.30 p.m. Present—Messrs G. A. Perry (Mayor), H. M. Coulson, J. King, AY. Jeffries, G. Heinz, and D. J. Evans.
An apology for absence was received from Mr Perlinin. Before the minutes were confirmed Mr Jeffries said he regretted lie was not present at the last meeting when permission was given by tho Couu i to a request for a picture show in the Theatre on Good Friday night, against the wishes of at least 75 per cent of the community. He wished to enter a protest at the granting of the request and regretted lie was not present to have entered his protest at the meeting when permission was grunted.
The minutes were confirmed and outward correspondence approved. IN\VA K D CORK ESPOXI)K X OK.
From Ivanieri Electric Ltd., stating the Company was doing everything in its power to improve the quality of tho electric light for the town.—Received as satisfactory. From Valuer General, Wellington, enquiring if Council were prepared to pay for the cost of the revision of tli. area known as South Hokitika. On receipt of the reply, a further reply would be made to the request for a revision of tile whole of the Borough.— Received ; The Town Clerk was instructed to reply stating the Council desired a revision of the whole of the Borough. From Christchurch Drainage Board acceding to the request of Council for their Engineer to visit Hokitika and confer with Council in connection with proposed drainage scheme.— Received. Mr Coulson moved that a vote of thanks he conveyed to the Drainage Board for their prompt agreement, and that tlic necessary arrangements he
made for the visit of the Engineer. Seconded hv the Mayor and agreed to, the Engineer to he written to as to a suitable date for the visit. From Department of Health forwarding notices to he served on owners of property.—Received and attended to. From Rev. Dr. Kennedy regretting his inability to take part in the Anzae Day service.*—Received.
From IT, Haines askenig for Council to make connection for drain from liis premises and also for permission to erect a verandah in front of his premises, Weld Street.—Received. Permission for erection of verandah was
approved and the question of drain con. section held over.
From District Engineer of Railways. Greymouth, asking for particulars cf requirements in connection with the line of rails on Gibson Quay.— Rcceivod; referred to the Chairman of Public Wonts and Overseer to state requirements.
From A. Cedernmn, asking for attention to drainage from Jollie Street on to his property.—Received; a reply to be sent, stating that the drainage, was from a natural water course, and that the Public "Works Committee would meet Air Cedernmn and discuss his proposals and report to the Council.
From J. Mclntyre. Sexton, asking for annual leave in .May.— Received and request granted. REPORTS. From Treasurer reporting receipts £lB lOs (Id; payments £25 2s (id; credit balance J8<531 18s 2d; loan account credit £212 19s Id.—Received. From Library Committee reporting that urgent attention was necessary to the roof of the Library.—Received. ATr Coulson moved that the immediate renewal cl' the routing he placed in t”c hands of Mr A. Wilson with the request that tho work he expedited is much as possible. Seconded by Air Heinz and agreed to. It was resolved that the Public Works Committee, on the request of its Chairman (Mr Heinz) he authorised to canv
out some necessaiy repairs to the main footpaths of the town. THE STRIKE.
Tim Mayor referred to the railway strike now in progress and moved:
“That this Council condemns the selfish strike now in operation, whereby the people of New Zealand a:e being made to suffer so that the objects of a small section may he attained ; end further that the Council approves of tl’o attitude of the Government in tin's matter, as just and reasonable.” The .Mayor said there were thousands of larmeis suffering, tho mills in this district would also soon have to shut down, mid it would seriously alfeet the whole of the district and Dominion. Air Coulson seconded the motion, expressing his great disapproval of the strike weapon. Supported by Messrs Jeffries and Evans, the former suggesting that the motion he telegraphed to the Premier and Afinister of Railways and the latter commending the attention of the merchants of tho town to the needs of the dsitriet. The mo tion was then agreed to. The Council rose at 8.15 p.m.
