There were nineteen starters in the high weight handicap. The “Herald" in describing the race for the Sydney Cup states that not until the straight was reached was Scarlet seen making her way through the big bunch, coming along in fine style "after a very exciting battle with Stony who also was not prominent until this'stage.

The “Telegraph" says that Stony who was proclaimed the winner was fairly outstayed by Scarlet who won comfortably. The Telegraph adds that it was a surprise win and it is certain that not even her most intimate connections profited much.
