NEWMAN SHIELD.

PRESENTATION TO WINNERS

There was a happy interlude on Cass Square on Saturday afternoon before the senior same took place, when the presentation of the very handsome Shield donated by Mr Tom Newman for district schools competition was presented to the first year's winners. Hokitika District High School team.

Mr Frank McGregor (President of the Westland Sub-Union) said he had a pleasant duty to perform, to ask Mr Hod Newman, to present the handsome shield donated by Mr Tom New i mu. to the last season’s winners, the local District High School. ITe would call on Mr Rod Newman to present the Shield. Mr Rod Newman then handed the very fine shield to Master R. King (Secretary of the Club) amidst a hearty round of applause. Mr A. H. Lawn then (on behalf of Mr Tom Newman) stated ho was pleased to have had the opportunity of donating the shield which he hoped would prove an incentive to the school boys to endeavour to improve the standard of play throughout the district. He congratulated Hokitika District High School team on being the first Club to have tile honor of holding the Shield for the season, and having the name of their Club engraved thereon. Mr Newman hoped this year to meet the Hokitika school hoys in Westoprt, where this year’s game will he played. Mr 'l'. Irvine (Hector) replied on liehalf of the schoolboys, thanking the donor for the very handsome trophy presented and expressing the pleasure at the School being successful in the last year’s competitions. He recognised ti;e high motive of the donor in presenting the trophy, but assured him that the schoollxiys did not need that incentive to make them tlav the game as it should he played. He felt sure that future competitions would always be well competed for. The players were not too confident of continuing to hold the trophy this year, but with the material they had, they would do their iy*st.
