Thu Matthews Ray. Tho idea of an electric ray. capable of control and direction, and possessing the p.owci to destroy life, derange all electrical machinery and explode shells and torpedoes, occurred several years ago to Mr H. G. Wells, who used it in his romance “The War <>t the Worlds." It will be remembered that when the British Navy set out to do battle uiili the invaders from Mars the terrible ray was directed against ship after ship, rendering their engines impotent and exploding all the ammunition aboard.
