WESTLAND CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.

A meeting in connection with tho above was held at the County Chambers last evening. There were present:—Messrs G. A. l’erry (Chair), Dull', Ferham, Broilie, Nightingale. Melntosa, Scarle, and Dr. Teichelinanu. Apology was made to the absence of Messrs Butler and Wild.

Before proceeding with the business the Chairman said as this was the annual meeting for the election ot officers etc., it might be as well to mention that there was a. feeling abroad that the present occasion might he opportune to consider the question ol linking up with tile Progress League, ’ill. two bodies were eo-existent in the town, and to a certain extent overlapped. Their mission was of a .similarcharacter, and matters affecting one, aliened the other. ’Hie personnel of the officers was likewise largely identical. It should be possible, lie thought, to bring about a merger without the bodies losing their identity, and in that way the special work of each could he continued uninterruptedly. He invited a discussion on the matter.

Mr Mclntosh concurred with the Fresident’s remarks and considered the proposal a. step in the right direction. Mi Duff also fell in with what was contemplated, and said if the amalgamation were effected a stronger and more effective organisation would result. Mr Perham felt disposed to fall in witli Hie proposition. He appreciated the latest action of the Chamber in securing the opening of the Telephone Exchange an hour earlier each day. I hat concession was proving a very great convenience. 'flic Chamber laid proved a useful body, and under the proposal asuccesled its work could be continued.

The nroposal was then adopted rs r resolution, and it was resolved to convene a general meeting of members by advertisement to decide the matter tinally at a meeting at the County Chambers at 7.30 o’clock on Monday evening next.
