A somewhat ambiguous statement made by a judgment creditor at the Gisborne .Magistrate’s Court caused a ripple of laughter amongst the legal luminaries present (states the Poverty Bay Herald). The debtor in tincase bad gone bankrupt, and as the creditor’s solicitor had not put in an appearance, tile creditor stood up and said: “I had i nstructed my solicitor, but he isn’t here, and see he’s gone bankrupt. American lawyers frequently work on (he principle that “delay is the best witness for the defence,” and the story is told of one lawyer who was strongly opposed to the trial of his client by a certain .lodge, ami was much chagrined when that Judge replied to his objections. “This case will he tried to-morrow. You need make no further application for adjournment. That’s the end of the matter.” It was not. When Idie case was called next morning the lawyer blandly informed the Judge that his client had been operated on for appendicitis the night before. A doctor was at once sent round to the hospital, and returned with word that this was correct—the man had had his appendix removed. Chuckling over this later, the lawyer remarked, “Waal, m.v client’s appendix was no special good to him, and an adjournment was.”—T.H.D. in “Dominion.”
