It is understood that ns a result of the petition promoted by the Westland Chamber of Commerce, the telephone Exchange at Hokitika will shortly open at 7 a.m. daily, instead of 8 a.m., thus adding an extra hour to the day’s service. The early hour will lie a great convenience lor travellers and others requiring taxis etc. Work about the railway yard is practically completed to-day, and the hai last train will finish up this afternoon. The ballast gang is being paid off today, hut some of the men will be moved north. The yards etc., are now in a very shapely state. The foreman, Air McCann was the recipient of a gold watch from his fellow workmen on the completion of the work.

New Zealand will have bank holidays on April 18th, 19th, 21st, 22nd, 23rd, and 25th this year. From Good Friday the banks will be closed for six days, the Wednesday of which will be St. George’s Day. Then they will open on the Thursday, and close again on the Friday for Anzac Day.

The Parnell Fire Brigade engine skidded into the Newmarket taxisi and, and badly damaged two motorcars about noon on Tuesday, 'flic accident occurred while the brigade was on its way to a call in Remucrn. When the engine bad almost reached the corner by Newmarket reserve, a- St. Relief’s Bay ’bus came round from Khyber’s Pass, circled the centre pole, where the taxis stand, and slowed down. The driver -of the fire engine was forced to put on bis brakes and turn outwards to avoid the ’lnis, and while doing so the engine skidded sideways, crashing into two taxis which were standing on the rank. Both vehicles were badly damaged, and the fire engine suffered slightly, but no firemen or people in tlio vicinity were injured.
