BEAUTIFYING SOCIETY
APRIL 9th. BENEFIT DAY. A meeting was held at the Town Hall yesterday afternoon to arrange for a benefit day to augment the funds of the Hokitika Beautifying Society. The Hon. 11. L. Michel, M.L.C. (President) presided. The Chairman explained that it was necessary to appeal to the public for additional funds to carry on the work of the Society. About one third of the main track round the Square had now l»en asphalted, but the work would have to stop for the present for the want of funds, as the late work had carried the Society into debt. However the financial year was now closing, and with the new year commencing fresh revenue would be coming in. Still it would be necessary to raise aliout £75 to tide the Society over its present liabilities and provide the quota, for the caretaker’s salary, and the proposal was to organise a monster benefit on some Wednesday afternoon on Cass Square for the purpose. After discussion it was resolved to fix Wednesday, April 9th. as the day for the benefit, and to seek the support of the Town Band and Athletic and Cycling Club in organising an attractive programme for the day, winding up with a community sing at night. It was resolved to set up a committee of ladies to organise and arrange for the customary gift stalls, including goods
uf all descriptions, vegetables, flowers, confectionery, refreshments etc. The following ladies were appointed a genral committee with power to add to their number:—Mesdames R. Appleton, Bennett, Benjamin, Butler, Rut-
land, Cole, Coulson, Lynn, Irvine, Pit kiiigton. Michel. Parkliill, T. Stuart, ITrquhnrt, Yarrall, Thompson, Morris Misses Thompson and Davidson. ft was decided to ask Messrs Irvine and Niven to arrange juvenile
sports; also to arrange for the introduction of some side shows such as hoop-l.i, box-ball etc. The Chairman stated that it had I>oe 11 decided to hold four community
singing evenings during the winter, and Mr A. 11. Lawn had undertaken very kindly to organise the opening evening, where a special orchestra would lxi in attendance. The Chairman stated the Society had an extensive programme in mind for beautifying work as funds permitted, the money available being the only limit to the operations of the Society. He invited the fullest co-opera-tion of the citizens for the coining effort, and hoped there would he a generous response to the appeal for funds, either in gifts or in kind. Ihe full-hearted co-operation of the citizens would he also a great incentive to the members of the Society. A vote of thanks to the chair concluded the meeting.
