THOUGHTS FOR THE TIMES.
Captain Oates. Since February 12th. 1913 so many terrible, far-reaching events have taken place that one's memory is liable to need jogging to call back the deeds of great men of pre-war days. That day eleven years ago there was published in the papers for the first time, the particulars of the tragic fate of Captain Oates, of the Inniskilling Dragoons, the companion of Captain Scott in that unforgettable expedition to the South Pole. One needs hardly any prompting to recall the story which Scott told in his diary, of Oates’ refusal to give in, although kis hands and feet were badly frost-bitten, and how he just went outside the tent saying he might bo some-time and he was not seen agaiu.
