The postponement of the swimming carnival last evening caused by the rain in the afternon, was a "'iso procedure, because the rain increased as the evening wore on, and the night was a very wet one. If the weather clears this afternoon, the carnival will be held this evening. Athletics are coining into their own again, and is therefore not surprising to hear that- great support lias been extended to the championship sports being held at Greymouth oil Saturday and Monday. Performers like Phil O’Shea, \V. F. Trembath and \V. Kelly should he worth going a long way to see in action. Train arrangements will suit Hokitika patrons. The funeral of the young daughter (Lucy), of Mr and -Mrs A. Cropper of Kotcrangi took place on .Monday afternoon, and was followed by a number of mourners. Bov A. C. Purchas conducted the service at. the graveside. A number of floral tributes were placed on the grave including one from the scholars of Koitcrangi School.
A very fine specimen of quinnnt salmon was caught in the Waimakariri Biver on Saturday by Mr H. •). Turner. The fish, reports the Lyttelton “Times,” is probably the finest specimen that has yet fallen to the rod in New Zealand waters. Its length is 42J- inches and it*s weight 331bs. The fish was caught near the mouth of the river and is in a very fine condition for the commencement of the season.
A Wellington observer reports that on Monday week lie observed two small double dots on the face of the sun, Ll l c first he has seen this year. On Tuesday he observed that these had developed considerably, and on Thursday the defacement represented a
group about 00,000 miles across, Such phenomena is usually connected with magnetic storms and aurora displays, though these have been knowi: t) occur without sun-spots being visible from the carin’s angle.

The boring operation being conducted by Mr W. 11. Wai burton (Government Boring KXpert) on behalf of the Grey Valley Coal Syndicate, resulted i» a. fine seam of clean, hard coal, of a thickness of eleven feet six inches, being struck at the depth of 211311. The location of the important find was close to the site of the main road at Tomkies Creek, in the vicinity of the Wallsend Bluff on ibis side of the bridge. The Grey Valley Syndicate only purchased the property from the liquidators ol the Dobson Coal Company a few months ago. The find hears out the wisdom of Mr Walter l.eitch's proposals, furnished in his report to the former company.
A quiet but pretty wedding look place, at Holy Trinity Church. Greymouth yesterday, the contracting parties being Richard, only son of Air and Airs Clark of Shakespeare Street, and Ruth, youngest daughter of Airs M. and the late Aim-tin Moore. Archdeacon Carr officiated. The bride, who entered the church on the arm of her brother, teas attired in save blue tnarocuin, with wide georgette sleeves heavily beaded and wore a black hat. She was attended as bridesmaid by Miss Jessie Clark, sister of the bridegroom. She looked very charming in grey face cloth with shoes and stockings to match. The duties of best man were carried out by AH' Ainu Walton. Alter the ceremony 'lie. newly married couple left for Christchurch, where the honeymoon will be spent.
