An extraordinary freak in Scotch ihi tle.s was brought -to Gamarii on .Friday by Mr I. Cullibertson. of Glenavy (says the '‘North Otago Times”). A -mu about five inches wide developed to a width of nearly nine inches at the apex, which cintaiued a cluster of about one hundred heads of bloom. Tlie caterpillar pest, says the “Waipu Post.” lias made its appearance in the district, a farmer at Hnirini reporting that a- veritable army of the destructive pests passed through a corner of bis property a couple of days ago, demolishing ail green stuff in their path. It is many years since caterpillars in such numbers have been recorded in this neighbourhood. Flocks of birds have been very active in reducing the numbers, but- the task is beyond even the it capacity.
