The tireliell rang out a vigorous alarm about half ail hour after midnight on Saturday night. A blaze that at first looked serious was found to he in Camp Street, an equal distance from the end of the Exhibition Buildings a|nd Tile Banks of New South 'Wales and New Zealand, a large packing case full of shavings being on lire, apparently the work of night prowlers. The nearby buildings were not endangered. A jet of water from a hydrant soon put the flames out. the Fire Brigade being promptly on the scene in force. Before dismissing tile Brigade at the station a few moments later Supt. Braddou said he regretted the men having been called out for such a purpose, but it was well that it was not for a more serious outbreak.
At a meeting of the Creyommli Jockey Club District Committee there were present Messrs T. E. Coates (chair , 11. E. Doegnii, W. 15. (filbert, .1. Walton, \Y. 11. Parfitt, and M. .T. Fogarty (secretary). The programme of the Westport- Jockey Club Easter meeting to be held on April o and /. was approved subject to certain arrangements being made by the chairman. The Kumara Jockey Club Easter meeting is to be held on April 21. with stakes amounting to C(>00 and the Westland Macing Club on April 20, with stakes of £750. Atr. Carl Glory has boon ajipointed acting-manager at Westport of the Bank of New Zealand, and Mr. Clarence St. George, formerly of Hokitika, and a well known rep. footballer, has arrived to take Mr. Clary’s place. The Grey mouth railway and foundry picnic took place at Lake Alahinapua on Saturday iu perfect weather. There wore over 1000 holiday-makers who had a very successful day.
The Kokntnhi picnic sports and swimming carnival will he held at Longford, Lower Kokatahi, on AVcdnesday Feb, 27th. Hot water and fresh milk will bo provided free on the grounds, admission also being free.
The funeral of the bite Air. Frederick Archer, the victim of the Bimu dredge fatality took place to Hokitika cemetery yesterday afternoon. There was a very large attendance of mourners, including members oftlie Druids’ Lodge who attended in force as a mark of respect to their late brother.. The Bov. P. B. Eraser conducted the service at graveside, the Druids’ service being read by the Arch Druid, Bro. T. Robinson. A large number of floral tributes were placed on the graveside from sorrowing friends.
