THOUGHTS FOR THE TIMES.

The Bai.anch of Trade

Last year's trading figures convey a lesson, or a message which ought to be obvious, namely, that New Zealand during the period made purchases beyond its means as measured by the value of the exports, high as that value was. AYe hope to see, as the monthly returns lor the current year come in, that over-importation is being followed by its natural corrective, so that the favourable balance of trade may be restored to a healthy position. It is very fortunate for the Dominion that outside markets for exported produce are good that dairy produce (now of first rank in New Zealand's list of exports, wool, meat etc., are high, but not even the excellent state of these markets, if it could he relied upon to bet, would warrant a continuance of last year’s heavy record of importations. ; —Lyttelton Times.
