[BT TELEGRAPH —PER PRESS ASSOCIATION.] W.lfi.A. CONFERENCE. WELLINGTON, Feb. 7. The annual conference of the Workers’ Educational Association was held to-day at Wellington. A remit was adopted asking the district councils for opinions regarding uniform class fees. Among recommendations of the tutors’ conference referred to the councils for their opinions, is the proposed provision for Libraries, financed by a £5 per annum rate per class, with a system of exchange. It was resolved to hold the next conference at Auckland. A motion was adopted to ask the Alinister of Education for an increased grant. During the discussion on this matter, the Wellington centre was described its being £'3so behind, there having been a great reduction in private subscriptions. SHEEP STEALING CHARGE. . WELLINGTON, Feb. 7. A charge of stealing two sheep, against J. P. 0. O'Connor, of Tinui, near Alasterton, the complainant being a neighbour, was heard at the. Supremo Court to-day. This was of inleresl, as important evidence was called regarding the removal of ears from the skins. A number of skins found on accused’s property had no ears, which is contrary to tin* Slaughter and Tnspeetion of Stock Act. Accused told the police that he was not aware it was an offence to removetiie ears, but thU ignorance was denied by the prosecution, and the question was whether the neighbour’s sheep wore killed with illegal intent or by mistake. The ease is proceeding. SOLDIER FAKAIS. ASH BURTON, Feb. 7. The Valuer-General, Mr Flannagan, and Mr R. A. Rodger, Government Representative cut the Dominion Board for re-valuing Soldiers’ Settlements, are hero conferring with the Ashburton Re-Vahuition Committee, and also the South Canterbury Committee, which journeyed hither for the purpose. The Hoard members are inspecting various properties in order to be familiar with them when considering the recommendations. They told a reporter that the Board is working well, having held ten meetings, and it is doing everything possible to expedite the business. The decision in each ease was being promptly communicated to the soldiers, bin so far as publicity is eonconred. this was being left to the soldiers themselves. The outstanding applications should he expedited, as February 2Hth is the closing date.
