A disappearing trick performed during the week-end by a truck-load of goods left on the Groymouth wharf is reported to be exercising tlie minds of the railway authorities, the people to whom the goods were consigned, and tho police. The circumstances, reports ihe Grey Star, indicate either a mistake on the part of the authorities. or a particularly smart piece of work by persons lacking respect for other people’s property. Tt is understood that the truck was loaded on the wharf on Saturday, in readiness for despatch to the Otira lino to-day, and the contents included fowl wheat, potatoes, benzine, kerosene, and other goods, the load weighing about one and a half tons, and valued at about £OO. According to information received by the “Star,’’ the guard of the train, upon arrival at Stillwater to-dav, discovered that the truck was empty. The matter is in the hands of the police, who at present are inclined to the theory that the goods may have been loaded by mistake into one of the steamers which since left the port, or the truck attached to a train leaving for another part of the district. The solution of the puzzle , should be interesting.

Defendant pleaded not guilty. Alter hearing evidence tho Magistrate in giving judgment said that with reference to the charge cf assault there was the iiiu-il conflict cf evidence. James Bourke had no witnesses and John Bourke had his father. James Bourke said he was struck with a stone and rendered nearly unconscious and the throwing of the stone was admitted by the otlter Bottrkes. John Bourke, inr., had, however, been struck in tho hack and struck fairly severely. It was not suggested that this was done by a stone thrown by Hie father at James Bourke and missing him and it was not probable that that was what happened. He had no doubt that .Tames Bourke struck John Bourke. There was no counter action against John Bourke. senior, and had there been it might have been necessary to find against him. Defendant would he convicted and fined £2. and would tie ordered lo find surety in the sum of £25 to keep the peace with John Bourke and his family and John Bourke and his sou would likewise tut bound over in the sum of £25 to keep the peace with James Bourke. all tor the period of one year.
