FREEZING WORKS BUSY

SHIPPING CHILLED BEEF. WELLINGTON. Jan. 28. It is stated that all the freezing works which are to operate in Wellington province are now open, and there was quite a rush at the beginning. Although Armour and Co. and other buyers have withdrawn from the trade, representatives of other concerns have, it. is said, been searching keenly for fat lambs, and prices have risen above London parity as was the c-a.se a year ago. Local butchers competed eagerly with export buyers, but prices have eased since the main crop has been coming forward. There is not much beef being taken for export, ami prices are inclined to ease, as the quality of most of the cattle coming forward is not suitable for the London markets. An exception to this, however, us the high quality of the stock which has been used for the experimental shipment of chilled beef, which was dealt with at the Wellington Meat Export Works, under the direction ol the inventor of the process. Mr Linloy. The bulk fo the animals were choice Angus. Hcref'ord and Shorthorn crosses, averaging from three to four years old. and they .should help 1" improve Hie nainc of New Zealand quality in the. London market*. Great care was taken in lhe slaughtering and dressing of the carcases, which were also carefully wrapped. The consignment m mi board the steamer Kent, which has been specially fitted-u]) with n chilling plant. It now remains to bo seen what is the final result of the experiment when the meat is put on the market in London.
