AUSTRALIAN AND N.Z. CABLE ASSOCIATION. SHEFFIELD SHIELD MATCH. SYDNEY, Jan. 2G. The Sheffield Shield match, New South Males v. Victoria, was commenced in lino weather. Owing to recent rain, the wicket was soft and slow. Victoria won the toss and sent the home team in. Xcw South "Wales in the first innings made 217 (Macartney 30, Andrews OG. Mailey, not out 22). F’or Victoria, Wallace took three wickets for 48 runs, and llartkoff 1 for 19.

New South Wales opened iuauspiciously on a wicket, which appeared nut too bad, Bardsley being dismissed for four. At the luncheon adjournment -1 wickets were down for 72. Andrews, however, who came in before the adjournment, hatted carefully on a wicket which was now much easier, and, when later partnered by Mailey, played a magnificent up-hill innings, varied with patches of enterprising cricket.

Mailey played well, .scoring all round the wicket, but being principally concerned in keeping the strike to Andrews.

Victoria has lost one wicket for II (Love not out 23). New South Wales gave a deplorable exhibition of fielding, the worst seen for some time. Four easy chances were missed, and those may cost the home team the game. SYDNEY, Jan. 29.

The cricket was continued in fine weather and a good wicket. Mullarky took Scott’s place, the latter straining his log on Saturday. Victoria has 9 wickets down for 323 (Mayne in, 135; Love, 31 ; Ponsford 110). The scoring was very slow at the commencement, the batsmen being afraid to take risks. Mailey, who was in great form was spinning the ball well. The partnership of Mayne and Ponsford was very dreary at the start as neither batsmen were taking chances. After luncheon Ponsford livened up and hailed superbly, driving and cutting delightfully and using his feet well. Tie scored ninety while Mayne was hitting up fifty. Ponsford hatted IG7 minutes and hit eleven fours. Macartney howled in his host form, keeping the batsmen quiet, but the fielding was again had, catches from Mayne being dropped three times and once from Ponsford.
