AVe regret to record tiie death ol one of Westland’s sterling pioneers in tlie person of Air James Alalloy, which took place at Christchurch yesterday morning after a paiulul illness. The deceased was 90 years of age last Snturav. and a single man. Ho came from -Sydney, where lie was a wellknown cricketer in his early days. He came to tell Coast from Otago in a 20ft. cutter ami landed far down in South AA’estland. after being swamped : and endured severe hardships before be reached the inundated portion of the district. With his partner Die late Mr AA'tn Keoeh. lie formed the well-known firm oi Recoil and Alallov, known throughout AA'estiand in Die early days. They had a business at Chesterfield in the early rush days, and ran the well-known wagon carrying business between Oroyiiloutli and lvumara. and Hokitika and Ixuinara, also carrying on an extensive business in Kumura trout tlie tiine ol the rush. The firm were interested in all the big mining ventures, including the Long Tunnel Comna.iiy and 'Os ■eust one rush interests. Later Die firm were interested in tlie steamers AAaipara and Jane Douglas, and took over tile business of • Chesnev amt Co. at Hokitika, which they ran for a number of years.
