British and Intercolonial Exhibition at Hokitika.

COUNCIL MEETING. WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 11th. The Executive Council sat at 7 5 p.ni. Present: Mr W. Jeffries (in the chair), Messrs Butler, Wilson, Perry Aitkeii, Davidson, Renton and Dr Teichelnmnn Apologies were made lor the absence of Messrs Perhum, Dalgleish and Wild. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed, and toe mil ward correspondence was approved REPORTS. Mr Jeffries reported in regard to various matters in respect to questions dealt with while oil a locent visit to Christchurch. Derry’s Rand.—The Rand was piepared to visit Hokitika on the occasion of the Diamond Jubilee celebrations about January llth and give seven performance*. It was resolved to engage llie Band and the Chairman and Secretary were empowered to arrange for accommodation, transport, etc. Air Rnekeii's Troupe of Gymnasts— This Troll no, twelve in number, was prepared to collie over opening here on Boxing night and give live or six appearances. Ii was resolved to accept the offer and to arrange for the necessni'v accommodation. Woolston Baud.- -An offer was 10ceived from tile Woolston Rand to make a week-end appearance at Hokitika. giving about four performances, but consideration of the matter was deferred for the present to await negotiations in respect to other proposals. A Concert Party of six performers from Christchurch. suggested l.\ Messrs Horne and Hobbs, to give thr-*c concerts, was available, and il was resolved to accept the offer ami to < nquire as to a suitable time for th* vi-it. by Primary or Secondary pupils attending any Government- School in the districts of Grey or Westland, the subject being “The "Province of Westland, its IJistorv mid Resources.” CONDITIONS—

I.—The subject of the Essay may be announced immediately to pupils eon* corned, and the Essays must be written on the morning of December llth. unless some public examination interferes with this being done, when perui.".-.*ion may be ohtnned from the Secretary for a fresh date to be selected. The time allowed for writing the essays must not exceed two and a-lnilf hours (211. 2. Previous to the writing oi the Essays intending competitors are at liberty to consult all available authorities and collect information from any other sources.

3.—The Essay must he written without the aid of notes or any other assistance at the time of writing. I. During the time of writing, the competitors must he carefully supervised by the teacher in charge of the class, and the headteacher must forward a rortilk-nte separate irom the essay that tho work so far as the actual writing of the essay is concerned is the unaided work of the competitor. o.—The essays must he marked either ‘•.Primary" or “Post-Primary” to indicate the nature of the school they have come from, hut no essay must hear the competitor’s name. For the purpose of identifying the essays each school will lie allotted a Roman numeral, which must lie placed on every essay from that school, while the teacher will also within each school, allot separate' Arabic numbers to distinguish the essays from that school. o.—The head-teacher of each school must road the essays of his own pupils and select the best therefrom according to the following scale:— From schools of grades 0. 1. 2. not more than 2 essays.
