EXECUTIVE COUNCIL MEETING. MONDAY, OCT. 29th. The Council sat at 7.1 a p.m. Present Mr W. Jell'lies (in the chair), Messrs G. Perry, R. Pei bant, P. Renten. G. Davidson. R. Wild, C. Dnl-gk-ish, W. .). Butler, A. Aitkon, Dr Ti'ichelmnnn and Hon 11. L. Michel. IXWARD CORRESPOXDENCE. From T. W. Woodroffe, reporting in respect to various matters affecting building, and the supply of decorative material.—Received with thanks, and resolved to purchase tho material for decoration as proposed. Front the Mines Department, expressing intention to exhibit at the Exhibition and asking what arrangements could he made with regard to show eases in which to place specimens.—Received, Secretary to enquire and reply. From the Department of Industries, stating that the Public Works Department was considering the question of prewiring a model ol the Arthur s Pass Tunnel for the Exhibition.—Received with satisfaction.

From the same stating that the Anchor Shipping Company would he pleased to display posters, hut that the Union Company did not have the spai -e available. —Received. From the Officer in charge Department of Industries, notifying that exhibits would reach Hokitika on the Bth December and asking that space he available at that time.—Received, to lie. attended to.

From the Collector of Customs, enquiring in respect to oversea exhibits. Received, Secretary to reply. From A. .T. White Ltd., Christchurch, in regard to the marking of bedding material.—Received and approved. From the Department of Industries, replying that the .Minister of Internal Affairs had agreed to loan war memorial tablets, designs, etc, and also an oil painting of Captain Frickleton. Y.C.—Received, enquiry to ho made in respect to packing and freight and also the loan of additional war pictures. From the Conservator of Forests, Hokitika, stating that the Department would prepare a timber products exhibit, and that arrangements in respect thereto were now in hand.—Received with thanks. From the Defence Office. Groymouth, indicating terms under which tho Drill Hall would he available lor Exhibition purposes.—Received and conditions agreed to, the drlling space to he left intact until Ist Doeoinhcr. From the Government Publicity Officer. Wellington, staling the preparation of photo enlargements and cinema films for tho Exhibition was now in hand and would he ready in ample time for the opening ol the Exhibition. From the same, stating that Mr 0. D. Barton, Assistant Government plioLograjilicr, would lie visiting tindistrict shortly for the purpose of collecting material in respect to the photographs for the Exhibition.—Received. From the District Telegraph Engineer, Christchurch, forwarding forms for application for a radio license at the Exhibition.—R ecei ved. Ltd., in regard to the fort-going, and also in respect to preparation of Inc catalogue.—Received ; photos etc. required to he sunnlicd. REROUTE. Mr Wild, on behalf ol the Advertising Committee, reported in respect to publicity matters, and it was resolved to make a-rrangetm-nis on the lines suggest oil. Mr Jeffries reported in regard to the recommendations from the Entertajument Committee. The proposals made in regard to the engagement of Derry’s Private Band were at .prove -

The suggestion was generally approved, subject to certain ,-ondiiions to hi* submitted to Mr Buckcl t and to arranging billeting for the performers.

Messrs Aldridge and Timbrell wrote in respect to taking charge of competitions etc and acting as supervisors in regard to entertainments. —Received and consideration deferred. It was reported that the number of beds and bedding applied for exceeded those available, and it was resolved to ascertain what number additional could he hired. With regard to hotel accommodation. it was resolved to ask the proprietors to advise the Accommodation Bureau before refusing applications for accommodation. Mr Butler, on behalf of the Building Committee, reported as follows:—“On behalf of the Building Committee. T beg to report that the construction of j tho Exhibition Buildings is proceeding j satisfactorily, and as most of the space is now roofed in admitting of the continuance of work in all weathers, there need be no anxiety as to whether the structure will To sufficiently advanced to receive exhibits well ahead of the time for opening. At the same time the Council may vest assured that in tho capable hands of Mr Andrew Wilson there will lie no slacking of effort on tHis account, and the spur of necessity will not he needed j to ensure the work being completed at the earliest possible date consistent i with economy. As in all such affairs there have been ! numerous unforsesocu difficulties to contend with, hut these have been overcome as they arose, and there is every reason to feel confidence as to the manner in which ally future difficulties will he dealt with. The approximate expenditure to date is as follows :

Of this sum there will he fully £1683 represented by material, a large percentage ef v. liieh will be realizable at a fairly high percentage of the original cost. Accounts to the amount of £BO2 12s 0d were passed for payment. The Treasurer reported the receipts to date were £‘295 Gs 3d. The total cheques issued to date including £312 10s 2d, of the accounts passed that evening, wore £762 6- Id. It was reported that accounts for space had now been issued and the amounts were payable inuncdintcly. It was resolved to submit to the next meeting particulars of revenue and expenditure at date, together with an estimate of other commitments involved in connection with tlie Exhibition. The Chairman reported that an interview had been held with the Inspector of Police on Saturday with the result that proposals had been made for the Police Force to have charge of file Exhibition buildings during the night, and that police should he on duty iu the building throughout the day. This arrangement was generally approved, and has now been submitted to the Commissioner of Police at Wellington for approval. The meeting concluded at 10 o’clock.
