Tun good report given at lasi evening's meeting as to the progress of the Exhibition arrangements, suggests that oven the most sanguine expectations ns to the outcome of the big venture are going to be exceeded. Many of those who have seen the largo spread of buildings to house the exhibits, have wondered how the spar,, is going to he filled. The space booked already ensures the whole area being filled and already exhibits arc being diverted to the upktairs portion of the Town Hall to fiud adequate accommodation. The promoters have done good work evidently in noising the project abroad so as to ensure so lino a re-tilt in the short time. The Exhibition will certainly place Hokitika on the map. Comparatively small as the town i-, it has a traditional history in it- sixty years of existence which has made it a notablo roittro. Th t > heart centre’ nf the "Westland goldfields of the early rn-h ‘lay.-, gave it great prominence, and it has never lest the reflected glory ef those times. Jii.-t now Hokitika is coming into its own as the centre of an expanding past-oral country, and an important industrial centre, whence for long years to come, the Dominion will lie seeking its timber supplies. Hokitika has natural advantages in its scenic outlook, which are unequalled the world over. It. is therefore. a worthy centre indeed for a notable exposition of Empire goods and the event is going to lie one of outstanding importance and of particular merit.

The Hokitika Beautifying Association which has so well justified its existence by its persistent effort to do good work since its inception, is making a further appeal for funds. Next Saturday week it will bold “a day" on Cass Square in th 0 effort to raise more funds to carry on. The appeal is not likely to be in vain, seeing that in the past the association has been alive to its onerous dates, and has been doing its utmost with the money available to give the public generally good value

far the expenditure. Both Alacnndrew and Cass Squares bear testimony to the lively interest tlie Association tabes in public places whore attention is so desirable. Much more could be done, and for this reason extra financial support is required. The improvements Komg forward on C'a.ss Square promise to convert the grounds into a icsort in which the citizens will take special pride always. A suggestion has been made to secure a petrol driven grass mower so that the sward of the whole field might be kept as closely cropped as the area adjacent to the war memorial. Such a result would indeed be a delight to the eye, and if the funds could tie provided for that purpose, the pleasure the public would derive from the effective change would be well worth the outlay. At all events the Beautifying Association has earned all the financial encouragement the public can give, and the coming appeal should meet with a. liberal response.
