HIGH STANDARD AVANTEI). An indication of what the AVe.-thind Licensing Committee expects when it issues licenses for new or rebuilt hotels was given by the Chairman (Air AY. Aleldrum S.AI.) at the adjourned annual meeting of t lie com in it tee. The question arose when th 0 only general business dealt with by the committee was a request by Air J. AY. Hannan, on behalf of the licensee of the Caledonian Hotel, Air T. O'Brien came before the meeting.

Air Hannan said that it was proposed to transfer the license of the Caledonian Hotel to premises now known as the Temperance Hotel, at th e corner of Alackay and Tainui Streets, in the name of -Mrs Schroder. Such an application had to ho lodged 21 days before the present meeting, but it was only ail a<L journed meeting, and consequently the application could not he heard. Plans of the proposed alterations had boon inspected by the police, who were satisfied with them and he asked the committee after examining tile plans to give an indication as to whether it was satisfied with them so that Hie won; could be proceeded with freely.

The Chairman said that the committee haj considered the question, but did not wish to pro judge ail application that might come before them. The committee might have to consider objections and other matters that would perhaps oblige them to refuse an application and they did not wish tlierctoi'e to pre-judge the present application. “The committee wish to say. however," said the Chairman, “that any hotel which is erected in Greymoutli should he np to the highest standa-d. That is all that can bo stated on the subject at present.”
