THOUGHTS FOR THE TIMES.
Not a ism; Laisocm Leader. A noteworthy record is extended in the unanimous re-election of Mr Samuel ( lumpers as president of the American Federation of Labour. With an intermission of one year, Mr (hungers has non- occupied this position for forty viars. Me first became titular head of the federation in 1882. Like the action lately taken by the convention of the federation in expelling a Communist representative, the unanimous support given to Mr Compel-.- is an indication of tin* strength ot what is known as a conservative tendency in American l.alsiur movement. During the period of trade and industrial dislocation which followed the war. great dlorts were made by revolutionary extremists to destroy the personal popularity ot Mr j Compers. and upset the polity «.l moderate and assured progress tor wuieli lie stands. As a whole the proceedings of the federation convention now eoneluded indicate that revolutionary doetrines are a! a discount with the main Iwdv of American Labour.
