He defended the alteration in the telephone rates on the ground that the people who used it most should pay most. He also said that the business rates were too low in comparison with private rates. The object was to give countrv people a reasonable rate and ho believed that telephones should eonto before roads as they were a great comfort to the hackhlocks’ settlers, especially the women. The same thing applied to the rural mail service. The postal finance was buoyant and he onls wished the railways finance was as good.

Carleton and R. H. North made a first, wicket stand of 203 for St. Albans, senring 112 and 127 respectively.

A cable received by the Dunlop Cov gives the following handicaps for the New Zealanders in the WarrnahoolMclhourne road race—O’Shea ser.. Hill 8 minutes, Wright 12. Allen IT. Hell. M.onre and Marsh 18, Watson 31, Welsh, Birch and Grieg 10. The limit of the handicap is 70 minutes and there are 337 entries. It is understood O’Shea, Watson, Hell, Welsh and Marsh intend to compete.
