EDUCATE THE MASSES. “The enemies of democracy are on the watch perhaps on the pounce. This spreading of reaction against democracy needs careful watching. A few years ago British trade unions, temporarily captivated by the idea, called it ‘direct action.’ An increasing number of conservatives are looking towards unconstitutional methods for security against the changes which democracy may soon demand. A great lesson of the war is that democratic institutions will hoar the prolonged national strain whore autocracy breaks down. If the p-cople receive a sound education they can be trusted with the destinies of their country. Robert Lowe’s advice over Disraeli’s Franchise Act still holds good: ‘Let us educate our masters.” —David Lloyd George.
