Vichy healthy reports continue to be made in regard to the prospects of the Exhibition to open here on the loth. December. The great project lias reached that stage now when it behoves the entire community to iom hands ami concentrate in making the event all that it should be in material value to tho district. It. has to lw remembered that the Exhibition is not promoted for private gain. It- was decided open as a means to celebrate two important events in the history of the Coast, which, properly used, could lift tho district ahead by leaps and bounds. T be whole genesis of tho Exhibition movement- was to advance the Coast, to make its attractions and potentialities move widely known, now that there i.s direct railway communication, and the fullest facilities for cross the Island traffic and transport. So it is that all should unite in the common purpose of leaving no stone unturned to achieve the outstanding success which is possible by unity of action. In times past this community has undertaken large projects involving considerable local organisation to win through. They were successful every time, just because the folk worked hand in hand. We are now approaching the threshold of the greatest event in Coast history, and there is more occasion than ever for unitv of action.

There is work for all in the monster project in hand. If not assisting directly, much can he done hy moral .sup. poit, by speaking appreciatively of the great work in. hand. It is not an event where there is any room lor pessimism. Wo are satisfied th c promoters are all optimists, and they should be backed wholeheartedly by a community of optimists. Nor is there any occasion to detract from the importance of the event. Its significance marks the opening of the through railway and sixty years of settlement. Thr-v are two notable events which should be celebrated in royal stylo as a compliment to tlie pioneers of the early days whose enterprise and enthusiasm laid the foundation for the prosperity of lb,. Const. So great an event demands whole-hearted support, tor ir marks the progress of the Coast as a distinctive milestone along the years of development. When the future unfolds itself the people of the days to be, we are persuaded, will look back to the sixteenth year of the settlement of the district as the commencement of a now era marking a more vigorous period in the history of the place, lor the occasion opens the opportunity to march forward under greatly improved conditions supplying fresh facilities tor the development of latent prosperity.

Bet it will not be sufficient for the community to stand bv content only to applaud the procession as it passes along. It is requisite for the people to join in the procession, and swell its proportions and importance. 1 11 other words, there is tne obligation on the people to join in aiul help enthusiastically to make the promising success, greater and more assured. There is not a household which cannot do .something to help. Tito time for the Exhibition is approaching rapidly. There is occasion for all to he as busy as bees. During the Exhibition period itself Hokitika will be overrun with visitors. Every preparation should he in hand now to meet adequately with the influx in sight. \ isitors front other parts tell us holiday-makers will pour in here in great numbers. The community must needs get busy with the idea of making t-henr comfortably welcome, so that when, they depart, tlie\ will carry away such impressions and such, reports of their sojourn amongst us, that every visitor will lieeome a walking advertisement for the Exhibition, who will be responsible for sending ten more in bis or her place. It is for the people now to think Exhibition, talk Exhibition with the purpose of making it the greatest event in all our history;

When discussing with Hr. Tel lord, conditions at Greymoutli in connection with sanitary matters last evening, at a meeting of the Borough Council, Lr. llarker said he did not like to see the Doctor reported as classing Greyniouth with Hokitika. It’s quite apparent. even though you consider you have a. sewerage .system, that you’ve got, so mixed up that now you’ve really not a system at all." Hr. Telford said it seemed ridiculous to find pan closets in Hospital Street. There was a sewer in Lombard Street, yet ten premises had pan closets. The vast majority within the system woie pan closets. He was in an uncomfortable position, now that he knew how then pijes were jointed. “It will be necessary for you." he said, “to have the joints of the pipes re-laid, especially in High Street. Branch drains could then be provided. The first requirement. of the Council was a competent engineer to go into the whole scheme and if the pipes were found badly jointed, the Council would have to consider relaying the whole lot.
