YOUTH. AT 76.
NEW YORK, July 5. The National Health Council—a Ixidv composed of representatives of tho leading medical and public health organisations in the United States—started to-day a campaign which it predicts will result in the adding of 20 years to the average span of life in America. The campaign lias the endorsement of the United States’ Public Health Service, which points out that the average life of Americans during the fifty years from 1870 to 1920 lengthened from rt to 50. and adds that it is possible now to ensure that “fifty years from now the average man will live to be 70 instead of 50, and that he will feel spry enough to enjoy life at 76—and for a good deal longer.” Doctors here are agreed that overeating and too much meat are the main causes of decay in middle age. The Council invites every American to submit during the next twelve months to a thorough physical examination by a competent physician. It aims at inducing people to have themselves thus examined annually on their birthdays, so that the first signs of breakdown may he detected and remedial habits of life and diet adopted.
