British and Intercolonial Exhibition at Hokitika.
MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 24th
EXECUTIVE COUNCIL MEETING
The Executive met at 7.35. Present —Mr AY. Jeffries (chairman of Executive), Hon. H. L. Michel. Messrs R. AA'ild, R. E. Perham, P. Renton, A. Aitkcn. G. Davidson, \Y. ,T. Butler (president), and Dr Teiclielmann. Apologies were received for the absence of Messrs AV. AA'ilson and G. A. Perry. The minutes of the previous meeting were confirmed, and the outward correspondence was read and approved.
COMMITTEE REPORTS. Mr Perhan, chairman of the Timber Products Committee, reported in respect to a meeting hold on the Kith iiist., at which general arrangements were made for timber exhibits to be shown in the AA'estland Court. Replies were now being awaited from the millers and the Forestry Department. The Director of the Technical Schools had also been asked to exhibit wood-work prepared by the scholars. The Council was recommended to have the interior of a dining room prepared and he (the chairman) had arranged with a tradesir®!i to undertake this work, which is now in hand, and if was hoped to have a distinctive exhibit prepared. On behalf of the Arts Committee, Dr Teichelmann reported that the Committee had its arrangements well in hand. Pictures were being loaned by Canterbury and Otago, and a number of private artists would also forward pictures. A suggestion had been made to house the special pictures in the Carnegie Library, which was fire-proof, and the Library Committee was to he met in a day or two to discuss the arrangements. Enquiries were also being made with respect to photographs of scenery, Maori Art, etc.
Mr Jeffries reported on behalf of the Entertainment Committee in regard to a number of matters dealt with at the recent meeting. The indications were that there would be hearty co-opera-tion locally in assisting to obtain entertainments, and the question of inviting artists from elsewhere was now being considered, and a report in respect thereto would be submitted later. It was suggested to hold the .Jubilee celebrations on the SHh, Kith, 11th, and 12th of .January, and the Hon. J. Grimmond was suggested as chairman of the meeting.
Air P. Ronton reported for the Transport Committee that tenders had been invited for the earl age of Exhibition goods, but only one tender, that of E. AA’. Thompson, had been received. Tt was decided to accept same, subject to a proviso. AYith regard to transport, Mr Renton further mentioned it had been suggested a Bureau of Information should be opened, and lie had conferred with AL- L. E. Laugeson, of Kapitea, with regard to taking charge of the Department. A letter was read from -Mr Laugeson in respect to the matter, and was referred to the Transport Committee for their recommendation.
On behalf of the Building Committee, Mr Butler reported that 53,000 feet of timber in all had now been ordered for the buildings, and a further quantity was shortly to be ordered. Active building began that day. AA ith the regular arrival of the timber, the work would ho straightforward and the Building Committee had every eonfideiU'c in Air A. AA'iKon currying oni toe «>irl< expeditiously. Satisfactory arrangements had been made in the matter of drainage. These arrangement* will considerable reduce the cost which is had appeared would have been involved in this matter. Arrangements were being made with regard to the building at the rear of the Bank of X* -■ Zealand, and a conference was to he held the next day with Captain Steelman in respect to construct inmil alterations to the rear portion of the Drill flail. Superintendent Uradden would be consulted at the first opportunity with regard to the Fire Station and the placing of the appliances. It would be necessary in make application for the telephone wires being altered somewhat altered in Camp street, and il was do eided to eomnninieate aecordingly. For the Space Commit lee. Mr AVihl advised that SJlflS square feel had now been definitely allocated. In addition there was considerable reservation for Canterbury and AA’cllington to he finally determined in the course of the next week. The value of the spaee alloeated to date was CM,701 14s, and C'lOfl 8s 3d had been received on deposit for space. Bv flu- end of the week, -Air AA'ild anticipated that fully two-thirds of the space would be definitely appropriated.
The Hon. 11. 1,. Michel reported in regard to his visit to "Wellington, and interviews ,’with the British Trade Commissioner, Mr F.linslie. and Mr Edmonds i,f the Industrial Association. Both gentlemen were doing all they could to get into touch with exhibitors and it was anticipated that the "Wellington district would he well represented at the Exhibition, as also the representatives ot British industries who would require, it was thought, a fair amount of space-. Mr Michel's report was received with thanks.
MV Wild reported in regard to a visit to C’hristchurh last week when he had an opportunity of meeting the Minister of Industries and thanking the Government for the assistance the Department was lending the Exhibition, and specially appreciated the co-operation of his Department’s officers in the work of organisation. Mr Wild also met Messrs Collins, Schmitt, lloare and Woodroffo. and had a long discussion in regard to general arrangements in which several points wore settled. An opportunity was also afforded of meeting Mr Marriner, of Simpson and Williams, Ltd., and various enquiries in respect to supplies, oto., were made. Mr Wild mentioned that the secretary and other officers of Derry’s Private Band, Christchurch, interviewed hiyi with regard, to a visit to the Coast. The hand numbered (W performers, and it would be possible to secure the presence of the hand on favourable terms. Mr Wild’s report was received with thanks and the question of the Band was referred to the Entertainment Committee to look into ways and means and suggest a suitable time for the visit.
TXWARD CORRESPONDENCE. From his Excellency’s Private Secretary regretting that it would not be possible, owing to prior engagements in the North Island, for the GovernorGeneral to visit the Exhibition, but he hoped to be in Hokitika some time during the summer.—Received. From C. S. Dalgleish, accepting the position of chairman of the Agricultural Committee, and stating he was getting in touch with the Farmers’ Union and dairy companies, and had arranged for an apiary exhibit from Mr J. Murdoch of Ross.—Received. "From J. W. Collins, secretary of the Department of Industries, reporting in regard to supplies and other matters. — Received-with thanks. From the secretary of the Industrial
Association of Queensland, asknowledging lwoklets relating to the Exhibition, which he had pleasure in distributing. —Received.
From the Conservator of Forests, Hokitika, replying that the matter of a timber products exhibit for the AA estland Court would receive consideration. —Received. From Denys Iloare, Christchurch, telegrams and letters with regard to space required.—Received and dealt with. . From the Auckland Provincial Industrial Asoeiation with regard to the provision of space for stalls at the Ex-hibition.-—Received with thanks. From the AYellington Provincial Industrial Association reporting action with regard to circularising probable exhibitors in respect to space.—Received. From R. Maekley offering iron build; ings for sale.—Received, no action taken.
From the Southland Timber Co. in respect to a timber exhibit.—Rccoiv-, ed and resolved to ask the firm to supply an exhibit of its manufactured articles such as handles, pegs, etc. From Ellis and Barnard Ltd., Hamilton, forwarding quotation of threelily beaver board for counters and partitions.—Received and referred to the Building Committee. From the District Traffic Manager asking further particulars in respect to the proposed special service to Inangaimu Junction to serve the Westport aud Boiler residents.—Received, particulars to be supplied. From a Aleut and AA'ool publication, AA'ellington, in regard to advertising Exhibition. —Received. From Wise Bros.. Christchurch, forwarding illustrated catalogue of lurmture available for furnishing hostel. — Received. From a number of exhibitors .orwarding completed applications for spaee, together with deposits on same. GENERAL. Mr T. AA’. AVootlroffo had intimated to" Mr AA'ild his willingness to come over in regard to building details, and it was resolved to invito Air AA ood-l-ofio here on the oth. October and to attend the Council meeting on the 81 li October. ~ , It was resolved to hold a meeting pi the Lighting Committee on Thursday evening next at 7.30 o’clock. It was decided to extend an invitation to the Acting Prime Minister. the Hon Minister of Industries, and other members of the Cabinet to the opening ceremony on the loth. December. It was reported that the Hon Grimmond had consented to net as Chairman of the Jubilee Celebration Committee, aud it was suggested in convene a meeting m conjunction nun the Entertainment Committee at an early date when the programme for the occasion will be drafted. It was decided to write to the Government with respect to the loan of the Government War Pictures. Accounts to the amount ol Od were passed for payment as per schedule. The receipts to date weie noted at £lO6 8s 3d. , . Air G. Davidson, Chairman of the Machinery Committee, was invited to arrange mechanical appliances in connection with the Exhibition.
