British and Intercolonial Exhibition at Hokitika.

TIMBER PRODUCTS COMMITTEE

WEDNESDAY, STPT. 19th

The above meeting convened at 3.30 o’clock, was presided over by Mr R. E. Porham (Chairman). An apology was received for the absence of Mr R. Ross. It was resolved to write to tho millers of tho district with regard to a

general timber exhibit to he shown in the Westland Court, the space for which would he provided by the Local Bodies contribution towards the preparation of County exhibits.

It was resolved to recommend the Council to have an interior wall of a dining-room prepared, showing the various timbers available in their flushed condition, including pannellin.g, doors, mantle-piece, fire place etc.

It was further resolved to write to the Technical Schools with regard fo wood-work exhibits prepared at the schools, and to arrange for the spa-o necessary from the local contributions It was also decided to ascertain the scope and extent of Ihe exhibit: for Westland, to he prepared by the Eorestrv Department, and to arrange *f possible, for its inclusion in the Westlaud Court at the Main Entrance to the Exhibition. ARTS COMMITTEE. The 'Arts Committee met. at f. 30 Present: T)r Tc-iehelmaiin (in the eliair), Miss Aland!, Mesdnmcs Butler and Wilson, Mr J. L. Hughes and Dr Mandl. Tho minutes of the previous meeting were confirmed and a quantity of correspondence from Art Societies and others was read and received. It was indicated (hat paintings from the Otago and Canterbury Art Galleries would he available, hut- it was doubtful if there would lie any contributions from the Wellington or Auckland Galleries.

Enquiry was received from artists' in respect to space for exhibits, and the terms upon which disposal of pictures could he arranged. It was resolved to accept both loan and New Zealand artists pictures for sale, all loan pictures to he approved by (ho representative of the Art Gallery in the city whence forwarded.

The Chairman. Dr Mandl and Mr Hughes were appointed a Committee to collier wit'll 1 lie Library Committee with regard to a portion of the Carniegic building adjoining the exhibition buildings to hi l used lor housing the special pictures, that, building being tire-proof. It was resolved to notify artists that space for pictures approved would be available, and a charge of 10 per cent made on all sales during the Exhibition period. It was resolved to enquire with respect to the enlarged photographs of scenic views of the district, and to enquire from Ihe Government" Department regarding enlargement ol A\ esi Coast scenic photographs from tho Boiler south.

It was resolved to include other art subjects, including needle work, beaten bronze etc., and to enquire from tho Government Department for a display r>f .Maori art to he shown in conjunction with the Polynesian display to he made by the External Adairs Department.

It was resolved to write to the Melbourne and Sydney Art Galleries with regard to the loan of pictures, and also to enquire as to locally owned pictures available for display, and to communicate with the West Coast Committees with regard to the same matter. Tlie meeting concluded at 5.20 p.m. ENTERTAINMENT COMMITTEE. The above committee met at 7.50 p.m. Present—-Air W. .Jefiries (chairman) .Messrs Lawn. Ward, and Richards. An apology was made for the absence ot Mr C. B. Ross. The minutes of the previous meeting were confirmed, and a quantity ot correspondence dealing with various matters was read and received. It was decided to ask the following ladies and genllemciit to join the committee:—Misses Daly. Davidson and Davies. Mrs Carver, and Messrs A\ . E. Berry. W. Joyce, W. E. Williams, S. Ferris, and E. AY. Heenan. The chairman reported that he had conferred with Mr AY. E. Perry with regard to the combined choirs preparing tun or three programmes, and it was resolved to write to the eluiir masters and ask them to confer with regard to a definite arrangement. It was also intimated on he hall til Die Caledonian Society .that programmes for two evenings at least would he prepared. 7t was decided in respect to the days to he set apart for the visit of neighbouring towns, to arrange for the evening entertainment to he provided by visiting performers. It was also decided to write to the I>nnana and other bands in respect to visits during the period ot the Exhibition. and to ask the 11 rev mouth Oii best nil Society. Male Voice Choir, and (!revmoutli Competition Society, to cooperate in providing entertainments as could he arranged. . It was decided to enquire from the authorities in -respect to a suggestion to invite a Naval Contingent f on H M S Chatham to visit Hokitika an<l ,rive an assault-at-arms entertainment, "it was resolved to recommend tlie Council to fix the special celebrations tor the Diamond Jubilee for the 9th, 10th Uth. and 12th of January, and that the Honouable J. Gnmmond, MI, C Vjo suggested com ening chairman of the meeting to be set up to arrange the programme *°r the reception and entertainment of the Pioneers and other details with regard to functions covering that period. The meeting terminated at S-u o’clock.
