British and Intercolonial Exhibition at Hokitika.

SATURDAY, SEPT, loth

The Executive Council met tit 7.55 p.m. Present: Mr W. Jeffries (Chairman of Executive), Messrs R. Wild, If. F. Pcrhain, P. Renton, A. Aitken, W. J. Butler, AY. Wilson, Dr Teichellnann and D. J. Evans. An apology was made for the absence of the Hon It. L. Michel. PRINTING OF CATALOGUE.

Mr E. H. M trriner, representing Simpson and Williams Ltd., of Christchurch, Contractors for the printing of the official catalogue of the Exhibition, was present and explained his scheme Tor preparing tho publication. It was decided to make the catalogue a souvenir of the Exhibition and of the Jubilee of the Province, and to retail same at the Exhibition building at Is per copy. The literary portion will be divided into four parts dealing with Westland. Grey, Inangahua and li tiller districts, and will he freely illustrated with scenic and early day views. Mr Marriner .submitted a sketch of tlic proposed cover of the catalogue, the design being a striking one showing the tunnel portal and depicting tho mountain scenery. Tt will he a volume in all of about 200 pages, printed on good paper, and will lie a souvenir which will be greatly prized as a record of the Exhibition, and occasion of the Diamond Jubilee. Tt was resolved to order an issue of 5000 copies of the catalogue. GENERA L.

The Chairman welcomed Mr Renton to. a seat in tho Council, and invited his co-operation particularly with regard to the transport arrangements which was an important part of the preparation, for the Exhibition. CORRESPONDENCE. From the Secretary, Department of Industries and Commerce, indicating that the Mi nisi or of Railways had decided to accede to the request for free conveyance over Ihe railway of exhibits to and from the Exhibition, pruI vided no exchange or sale of exhibits takes place; such exhibits to he of New Zealand manufacture.— Received with thanks and appreciation, and resolved to write the .Minister for Railways and the Minister of Industries, thanking them for the concession made. From Same, notifying that the Resident Commissioner of Niue Islands had forwarded an Island exhibit for the Exhibition, and that in addition a Samoan exhibit for the Exhibition had been received already and was stored at Auckland for the time being. These exhibits of the External Department would he forwarded early in December in time for the Exhibition.— Received with thanks. Front Same, on behalf of the Patent Office, notifying that in terms of "The

Trade Marks Act” exhibits of inventions and designs would not he prejudiced if shown at the Exhibition, pending registration.—Received with thanks.

From the Mavor of I’ielou, notifying that the Town Clerk had been appointed Secretary to the local Exhibition Committee, and stating communications in respect to Exhibition matters should he lot-warded to that officer.—Received. Eroin I). Standage, lion. Secretary of the local Committee, Westport, enquiring in respect to exhibits, particulars of space, etc.-- Received and replied to. From Mrs F. Allen, Wellington, enquiring as to cost of special tours' in and from Hokitika over the period oi the Exhibition. —Received, information to he supplied. Front M. I Lumber, Christchurch, seeking engagement in connection with the control of exhibits at the Exhibition and stating lie acted in that capacity at the Christchurch Exhibition. Received and deferred for consideration. Fmni a number of Members of Parliament, notifying intention to visit tin' Exhibition during the period of the display.—Received.

From the .Manager. Jubilee Hell Ringers, Hastings, forwarding particulars of entertainont and enquiring as to appearance terms. —Received and referred to 1 lit* Entertainment Committee. From a number of exhibitors, forwarding deposits to the amount of £l2 2s 9d on space selected.—Received. From S. Dickey, Christchurch, onf|iiiring re space for day-time camera. Received and information to be supplied. From Secretary Auckland Industrial Association, enquiring fur particulars of space available.—Received and supplied. From T. AY. AYoodroffe, forwarding plans of Exhibition buildings and inviting attendance at Industries Week in Christchurch, opening oil the 18th iiist.— Received. Alessrs AYild, Jeffries, Pel-hum and Dr Tcichclnianu expressed their intention of being present if possible during the period oi Industries Week. REPORTS. Air Butler reported on behalf ot the Building Committee that the plans had been gone into carefully and the quantities taken out, and it bad been decided to place the orders for the limber as early as possible with the millers at a uniform rate. For that purpose the millers had been called together and the matter had been discussed at some length, and after consultation, the price had been fixed at 12s per 100 delivered on the work. Air 11. A. Thompson, member of the Building Committee, said the price was a very reasonable one, and it was actually a material contribution, to the Exhibition proposal. Dr Teiehelir.nnn moved that the report he received and approved, and all matters in connection with the building he left to the Committee to arrange. Air Wilson seconded the motion, which was carried unanimously, and a vote of thanks accorded the sawmillers for the concessions made. Air Wilson asked that in view of the duties involved in connection with the accommodation, that he ho relieved of the position as Chairman of the Entertainment Committee. After discussion it was agreed to do so. and AH Jeffries undertook to take the ( hairmanship of the Entertainment C'om- . mittee. It was resolved to ask AH C. A. Dalgleish to take the Chairmanship of the Agricultural ' Committee (in place of AH Jeffries) with n seat on the Council,

Mr Perham reported with regard to tho meeting of the Timber Products Committee, and it was agreed to call a further meeting on Wednesday afternoon at 3.30 p.m. Messrs Wild, Wilson ail'd Perham were appointed a sub-committee to arrange with regard to accident and lire insurance.

Mr Marriner, who had remained at the invitation of the Chairman, discussed numerous matters with the Council in respect to Exhibition matters, and supplied valued information on several points. ■ In connection with the visit of members of the Council to Christchurch during Industries Week, he undertook to look into different matters with regard to local requirements for special displays, and made suggestions with regard to entertain* nients for the Christmas season, including a special night on Christmas Eve for tho children. Mr Marriner was accorded a vote of-thanks for his information.

BUILDING COMMITTE*

A meeting of the Building Committee was held at the County Charnbres at 8 p.m. Present: Air W. J. Butter fin the chair), .Messrs 11. A. Thompson, I). Stevenson and A. Wilson. The plans and proposals for the building were discussed and ultimately the saw - millers were met with regard to prices for supplies, when an agreement was reached in accordance with the report made above, to the Exhibition Council.

It' was decided tu comence building operations as soon as the necessary timber was delivered, and it is expected that the work will commence in Camp Street in the course of a few days. It was decided to write to the Borough Council with regard to the closing..of the street, in accordance with the provisions of the Exhibitions Act.
