Racing Experiences. Air \v. 0. Stead, in a Press interview, .stressed tlie fact that taxation and the cost of travelling and upkeep is freezing racing out in Now Zealand. He instanced that last year he and two other prominent owners won in the vicinity of £'lo,ooo each in stakes, yet they showed a loss on their racing transactions. In regard to the cost of travelling with horses, he stated that he railed a team from Hastings to Auckland and back, for which he paid a chcijuc of £"2011. It would have been cheaper to lake the horses to Sydney, lie said. He groups into three types the Now Zealand owners who visit. Australia. The first are those anxious to match New Zealand’s Lest horses with Australia's; the second are those who arc anxious to sell their horses; and the third those who arc unable to make cuds meet in Now Zealand and are after the tempting prizes provided in Australia.
