The death took place at Reefton Hospital on Wednesday afternoon after a very short illness, of Daniel James Kelly, a well-known miner. The deceased had recently been working at Waiuta, and came to Reefton at the end of last week, where his home was. He was taken to Reefton Hospital, where an operation was performed, but he passed away. The late Mr Kelly was 5!) years of age. and a native of New Zealand, and he leavevs a widow.
A well-known farmer was driving in his motor-car from Stratford to Eltham. On the road (relates the “Argus”' ho passed two men who asked for a “lift.” “Certainly,” said the farmer, “jump in.” He drove them along some distance, and then stopped, saying, ”1 have to call in at this house lor a few minutes, but you need not get out. Just stay in ibe car and 1 will take you the rest of the distance.” He threw his overcoat off, wont in to the house, and was soon out again. Rut when he came out the men had decamped, taking the (armor's overcoat with them. This may he looked upon as a champion specimen of mean theft.
