HOKITIKA BOROUGH COUNCIL.

YESTERDAY’S POLL RESULT.

MR D. J. EVANS RE-ELECTED

The poll for the election of one member of the Hokitika Borough Council in the place of Mr D. J. Evans, resigned, but- who offered himself for re-election, took place yesterday. There was not a great amount or interest shown, tho result being generally considered to be a foregone conclusion. About 7.30 p.m. the Returning Officer (Air A. A. Andrewes) announced, the provisional result to he as follows : D. J. Evans 385 A. G. Pilkington 13S Informal 6 Afnjority for Mr Evans .. 247 The total votes east were 529. At the general election of the Borough Council held in April Mr Evans received 555 votes and Air Pilkington 333. when 900 votes were cast. There were about fifty persons prosent in the Town Hall when the announcement was made and AH Evans who then mounted the platform was received with applause. He said he desired to thank them for the confidence reposed in him. and to thank the ladies and gentlemen who had kindly shown their interest on his behalf. He would say that now lie was again a member of the Council and had their mandate, he would to the best of his ability endeavour to advance the interests of tho town. His ability .would he used to the best possible advantage, and he would cooperate with tlie other members of the Council to advance Hokitika. He then moved a vote of thanks to the Returning Officer and staff, which was carried by acclamation, and the proceedings terminated.
